Explained by a Pool Pump Repair Expert
The pump is to a pool what the heart is to a circulation system. The pump pulls water from the pool through the main drain and skimmer. It then pushes the water through the filter. After that, it returns it to the pool through what are called main returns. Learn what other information we, as pool pump repair experts, have regarding the pool pump.
The pump has three components – the motor, the impeller, as well as the hair and lint trap.
The Motor
It is electric, and it uses either 110 or 120 volts, turning at 3, 450 rpm. It is cooled by air, and since it’s not completely sealed from the environment, caution should be exercised to prevent the surplus water from entering the motor via the cooling vents that can be found on the housing’s underside.
The Impeller
It is connected to the end of the motor’s shaft. While turning, the impeller pulls water in via the hair and lint trap which is located at the pump’s end. It then pushes the water out the top of the pump, using a pipe that leads to the filter. There are small openings on the impeller, which make it quite susceptible to getting clogged with debris. If the pressure on the gauge at the uppermost part of the filters reads lower than the recommended levels, and the amount of weather that flows back to the pool has decreased, the impeller is likely either damaged or clogged.
Whether the impeller is damaged/clogged can be established when the assembly is separated at the impeller house and the impeller is visually checked.
The Hair and Lint Trap
It is located at the end of the pump assembly and prevents the debris from entering the impeller assembly. Inside the trap, there is a basked that you have to check as well as empty one or two times every week. When the basket gets clogged, the water flow into the pump is restricted, and the pump starts to pump air, and not water as it should do. This flaw is known as the “loss of prime.” If there was no basked, the impeller would easily get clogged, preventing it from pumping big amounts of water, or it could get damaged.
